The church leader led Mott through the garden where the flowers looked like they were still in the midst of a Spring. A cool wind whipped the back of Mott’s neck, reminding him that it’s still only Fall. At the far end of the garden the trees loomed with a threat that Mott couldn’t hear. Blind and deaf in the darkness of the garden, Mott wondered if he was ready for whatever was ahead of him.

Edges of a City
“Happy Halloween!” the kids called out as they left the house.
Before Dan closed the door, he heard one of the kids saying, “That house smelled weird.” Dan almost gave them a piece of his mind, but he let it go because he knew they were going to get theirs when they got a mouthful of his candy. ‘That’ll show ‘em,’ he thought to himself.

“Treat! Treats for all of you!”
Jessica dropped handfuls of candy into each kid’s bag. Her eyes finally drew up behind the kids and stared down the teenage girl who didn't wear a costume but still held out a bag. Jessica ignored the girl, but when the girl finally looked up from her phone, she said, “Trick ‘r treat.”
Jessica cleared her throat, looked the girl up and down, and said, “Trick.”

That was the moment the kids knew what was going on. They didn’t have to say or ask much more, and they really didn’t want to. Jessum just stuck his hand out and opened out his sausagey fingers. Jersey kept eating his Bargetto’s, chomping and chewing and crumbs flew out on the kids until they finally gave up their wallets. Bronzeman hesitated for a second and Jersey said, “No such thing as super heroes kid, you’ll just get your ass kicked.”
